South Africa President Suffered Cyber Attacks From Notorious Hacking Group

Loading

The current President of South Africa, Cyril Ramophosa, suffered a cyber attack which exposed he’s personal information.

Who Was Responsible?

A well-known hacking group named SpiderLog$ has claimed responsibility for the attack. The offensive was surprising because the target is a popular businessman and the leader of an entire nation whose information is protected by top tier security.

Nonetheless, the hackers devised a means to access the details of the loan of Ramaphosa from one of South Africa’s top four banks in 2000s.

Confirming the news, the president’s spokesperson, Tyrone Seale the victim is more concerned about how is data was illegally acquired, how it was used or made available to the general public without considering he’s position.

In March, Ramaphosa’s personal information was stolen with TransUnion hacking skills which led to the exposure of 28 million credit records and 54 million identity numbers belonging to South Africans.

What the Attack Revealed About South Africa

SpiderLog$ was able to spot vulnerabilities in South African security systems including those employed in government departments with defense and state security. South Africa has been designated as the base for hackers to deploy malicious activities.

The group also claimed that it was not limited to launching offensives on politicians alone but could also gain access to the Department of Defense (DoD) and the State Security Agency (SSA). Due to the consistent breach of the security agencies’ systems, hackers have easy access to undertake their malicious acts.

According to a report, SpiderLog$ showed evidence of the paper revealing sensitive military and intelligence data. In one of these screenshots, SpiderLog$ disclosed how it could gain entry into their infrastructure to stimulate entry to defense and state security departments’ webmail interface.

Efforts have been implemented domestically and judiciously by law-enforcement agencies with partners in the private sector to devise strategic methods and solutions which can halt cybercrime.

New ideas should be generated as hackers also implement new tactics to carry out their acts. It is advised in all countries to continuously evolve methods to combat cybercrimes.
