Security Breach at Rockstar Games: Hackers Leak GTA 5 Source Code and GTA 6 Files

Loading

Rockstar Games is grappling with a fresh security challenge as reports emerge of a potential compromise and online leak of the source code for Grand Theft Auto 5, along with other sensitive materials.

Recent accounts suggest that the entire source code for the popular video game Grand Theft Auto 5 has been made public. Additionally, there are indications that this leak may extend to materials related to Grand Theft Auto 6 and files from a potential sequel to the 2006 game Bully.

This development follows the recent sentencing of a hacker linked to a prior GTA 6 gameplay leak to an indefinite term in a hospital prison.

Turbulent Year for Rockstar Games

Rockstar Games has had a tumultuous year, marked by multiple security lapses disrupting its operations. A network attack last year resulted in the unauthorized release of nearly an hour of gameplay from the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.

The situation escalated further when developers were compelled to release the video prematurely due to another leak, disrupting plans for a major trailer premiere. The recent GTA 5 source code leak presents an even more substantial challenge for Rockstar Games.

Reportedly, the GTA 5 source code has surfaced on the dark web following an initial exchange between individuals. The leaked 4GB file, primarily containing codes, is believed to encompass 3D models and assets, potentially enabling the construction and operation of the game. Releasing the entire source, estimated to be around 200GB, poses challenges due to its size.

Furthermore, the GTA 5 source code leak is said to have exposed confidential employee data of approximately 1158 Rockstar Games staff, including email addresses.

Despite efforts to remove online links leading to the Grand Theft Auto 5 source code, there are speculations that hackers are deliberating whether to make the massive 200GB source file public.

While this incident has recently come to light, it is thought to be linked to a security breach that occurred a year ago. Complicating matters is the revelation that the leak includes portions of the code from GTA 6 and files from the highly anticipated Bully 2. The GTA 5 data leak also unveils several unreleased DLCs, including the GTA 5 Trevor expansion mentioned in earlier leaks.

Implications for Players

The implications of the GTA 5 leak are particularly worrisome, as it empowers hackers to exploit security vulnerabilities in the source code, potentially allowing them to remotely execute code on players’ computers. This poses a significant safety concern for players, as GTA Online could become a precarious environment.

Fans have pointed out the timing of this incident during the holidays, when many developers are likely on vacation, potentially exacerbating challenges for Rockstar Games and its production staff.
