Recently discovered cyber security threat comes from hackers linked to Russia and can be likened to the Wagner paramilitary organization.

Business corporations are the main target of the country’s cyber defenses and must help defend against groups bent on incapacitating critical infrastructure, a minister will warn on Wednesday

Furthermore, he says, Kremlin-aligned groups such as Wagner are hurling potentially devastating invasions to cripple or destroy targeted infrastructure in key sectors such as power and utilities.

In January, Russia linked hackers targeted Royal Mail and last year, they targetted South Staffordshire Plc, the parent corporation of South Staffs Water and Cambridge Water.

Over the past 18 months, Russian cyber adversaries have emerged. These Kremlin-aligned groups are often sympathetic to Russia’s invasion and are ideologically, rather than financially, roused to defend and fight for their country’s agenda.

In a sign of the growing danger, the National Cyber Security Centre is handing out an official threat notice to operators to help protect the country.

Therefore, in an attempt to bolster the government’s ability to hold operators of critical infrastructure to account, plans to set specific and ambitious cyber resilience targets for all critical national infrastructure sectors to meet by 2025.
