Microsoft Joins Ukraine War Efforts As Recent Cyber Attacks Raise Serious Concerns

Loading

Microsoft has been silent as at the initial stage of the Russian invasion. However, the tech giant has decided to join Ukraine’s war efforts as recent cyber attacks raise concerns under the Geneva Convention.

Although there are clear laws governing cyber strikes by states, MSFT seems to have tied the cyber assault on Ukraine to war crimes. One of the reasons for this conclusion is that a new form of “offensive and destructive” software was found. They were said to have been aimed at Ukrainian institutions in the hours leading up to the ground offensives.

Microsoft also said it had observed a barrage of cyberattacks zeroing in on Ukraine’s agricultural, commercial, finance and energy sectors. With the assault is mostly on civilians, it was considered a war crime.

As the tech giant pushes to regulate cyber wars, a Ukrainian cyber guerrilla warfare group plans to launch digital sabotage attacks against Russia. In response to previous strikes, the group will target infrastructure such as railways and the electricity grid.

There may be more worries for Microsoft as some civilians from the invaded territory were seen citing possible targets. One such stated that Russian cities generate heat and hot water in central plants, which then distribute to residential buildings. Hackers should target these plants and start destroying them by causing pressure surges.

With the discovery of a new data wiper malware has been observed deployed against an unnamed Ukrainian government network. It remains a guessing game as to how MSFT will aid Ukrainians in the ongoing crisis
