Meta CEO Raises Alarm Over Metaverse Becoming a Playground for Hackers

Mark Zuckerberg raises alarm over the possibility of the metaverse becoming a playground for hackers.

Hackers Will Evolve Their Mode of Attack

Threat actors evolve their mode of attack by changing their tactics, techniques and procedures towards a target. This will also be observed in the emerging offensives in the metaverse. Users of virtual reality are negligent to the negative impact of metaverse.

The intent for the malicious will be to intercept vital information from targets. One way this will be achieved is by adapting their strikes to the virtual world. Virtual reality players can be tricked by impostors who can wear the characters of a known player.

The Metaverse is at Risk of Massive Cyber Attacks

Impostors will use metaverse to deceive virtual reality users by replacing the authorized users. Speaking about the risk of cyber attacks on the other world, Goldberg said chances are very high as there are no plans in place to prevent them. He explained that metaverse can be easily accessed to perform scams without any signal to the user.

The most immersive experience is with VR headsets, where other players appear as custom avatars – friends are recognizable, but it’s imperfect.

To manifest in corporeal form of authorized identity is the motive of an impostor which results to stolen credentials, password, username, sensitive data and infrastructural damage. They wear a fake character to exploit data breach and commit fraud.

Being vigilant is not the only way to escape from this attack. In phishing emails, the links can be verified before clicking, unlike metaverse used by the fraudsters to escalate privileges to gain complete authorisation.

Goldberg stated that a hacker can implement a method by calling a new metaverse user. While this is ongoing, the threat actors record the user’s details for username, password, email address and IP address to enable access to the user’s account.

Once logged in, the impostor can use this medium to communicate with the target friends to inquire about finance and sensitive data. Metaverse impersonation can be easily achieved with a huge amount of data stolen.
