American Publishers, Macmillan, Suffers Massive Cyberattack
American publishing company Macmillan shut down its operations as it suffered cyberattacks.
The attacks forced the company to shutdown its digital operations to prevent the damage from spreading within its network.
The company’s spokesman Erin Coffey told the media that the attackers encrypted some files on the Macmillan network. Cybersecurity experts believe the offensive was a ransomware attack. However, no group has claimed responsibility for it.
The cyberattack happened on June 25 and also affected its other branch in the U.K. called Pan Macmillan.
The firm failed to disclose further details on the incident. Nonetheless, a staff member stated that they couldn’t access their emails or files. Grace Kendall tweeted, that in case you haven’t heard, Macmillan is experiencing a digital security mishap.
She added that systems are shut out of an abundance of caution and offices are closed today and possibly tomorrow. Speaking on how long it will take to recover, she said that hopefully, they will be up and running soon.
Macmillan Takes Precautionary Action
Macmillan said they had to take precautionary measures to prevent further damage. Erin Coffey said that as a precautionary measure, they immediately took systems offline to prevent further impact to our network.
He added that the firm is working diligently with specialists to investigate the source of the issue, understand its impact, and restore full functionality to the network as soon as possible.
He appealed to customers to remain calm efforts are being made to restore and install additional network safeguards. Due to the incident, Macmillan closed its virtual and physical offices in New York. It also warned that the cyberattack could cause delays in booking shipments.
Coffey said Macmillan has already begun bringing systems back online. He added that certain systems were back online, including those that were offline as a precautionary measure.
