LockBit #Ransomware Gang Attack The Portuguese Municipal Water Utility Aguas Do Porto
This report comes shortly after the LockBit ransomware gang claimed to have hacked Aguas do Porto, a Portuguese municipal water utility company, and it threatened to circulate the hacked data.
Aguas do Porto is a municipal water utility firm that handles the full water cycle possessing water supply and wastewater drainage.
Hacked Affirmed and Prompt Investigation
The firm supervises public lighting and photovoltaic parks. Additionally, LockBit has added the municipal water utility firm to the list of targets on its Tor leak site with a leaked deadline on March 07, 2023.
It appears LockBit is yet to publicize samples of the hacked data as confirmation of the security breach. What we do know at the moment is, it’s unclear the importance and the type of data stolen by the threat actors.
However, the firm announced the security breach on January 30. It announced that a cyber attack disrupted some of its services, but it did not influence the water supply and sanitation.
Further insights were shared through CNN Portugal when it confirmed that the National Cybersecurity Center and the Judiciary Police are investigating the attack, additionally, some of its customer services suffered constraints.
Furthermore, the firm says, all customers who, in the last 72 hours, put forward requests for information, service, and complaints, among others, should reach out to the municipal firm.
LockBit Previous Attacks Allegedly Led To Current Attack
In December, Lockbit breached the systems at the Port of Lisbon. The Authority of the Port of Lisbon declared that the cyber attack did not disrupt operational activity at the integral infrastructure.
The authorities informed the National Cybersecurity Center and the Judiciary Police were notified of the incident. The ransomware gang likewise hit Divultec, a firm that supplies computer services to third parties.
CNN Portugal declared that LockBit stole several sensitive details of data from Divultec’s customers, including Águas do Porto passwords which very likely led to the current hacking incident.
