Killnet has Key Italy Government Website Within its Grasp

Killnet recently claimed responsibility for the attacks on Italy. Affirming the report, Italy’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) has revealed DDoS attacks against important sites of government.

DDoS (distributed denial of service) aims to disrupt the normal flow of a server and cause traffic on the network rendering the site inaccessible to legitimate users which results in a data breach.

The group responsible for the attacks claimed responsibility for it via a Telegram group where constant updates on their recent exploits were announced.

The announcement made by CSIRT disclosed how an attack mode of operation on the country’s government, parliament, legislation, compliance, and administrative websites was enforced by the “Slow HTTP” technique.

This method is achieved by sending numerous HTTP requests to the server at the same instance thereby leaving the server flooded by making the request slow or incompletely accessed.

Incoming communication sent to the server is being detected, resources are allocated respectively to each target, overload of this communication will make the server filled in accepting more connections.

In response, CSIRT said that Firewalls are being installed to target any suspicious links to get the hackers from relaying their criminal actions. Compilation of necessary policy requirements, rules, and regulations is presently used in places, especially the political sector, to sanction any violation made by hackers.

The team concluded by adding that the DDoS attack is efficacious in sectors that use POST requests as they are used to send a large amount of data to the webserver.

Previous Killnet Attacks

Pro-Russian hackers launched a barrage of cyberattacks on German government websites and politicians, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s party-affiliated site, citing an official investigation.

The websites were said to have suffered from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), which blocked access to them. There were further reports of attacks on Germany’s Defense Ministry, parliament, Federal Police, and several state police authorities.
