Rumour: Killnet Claims Cyberattacks Launched on Estonia’s President Website

The president of Estonia, Alar Karis, said in a show that his official website faced brutal cyberattacks. Rumors circulating the media have it that the pro-Russian hacking group, Killnet, claimed the cyberattacks launched on Estonia.

This is not the first time the presidential office is facing a cyberattack. He added that Estonian authorities confirmed the offensive was fifty times more severe than the last they faced.

The president said that lessons learned in the past have made the country strong enough to defend against cyberattacks. He is very sure that the country can defend itself from cyber offensives.

The reason for this feat is because of the additional security they implemented. The Executive Director of CERT Estonia, Tonu Tammer, added that three weeks ago, the presidential website suffered a DDoS attempt.

As per the report, the attackers made about 40 million attempts on the site. Notwithstanding the fact that the President of Estonia is well-known and beloved, this level of interest is neither normal nor natural.”

He added, “These attacks have no further effect on the website because, thanks to government funding, we have added an extra layer of protection to nationally important websites. This allows us to distinguish between legitimate and malicious queries and avoid a situation where malicious amount of traffic causes a website to shutdown.”

Previous Attempts on Estonia

Tammer said the number of cyberattacks on Estonia has doubled since the Russian-Ukraine war. He said the country suffered a series of cyber attacks from April to May.

In May, Killnet was responsible for the cyberattack launched on Estonia. Estonian Authorities are still investigating the attack which occurred on Saturday. Tammer said that similar attacks will continue for a very long time. “The Estonian people and government will have to prepare for this for quite some time,” he stated.
