Russian Hackers Claim Responsibility for DDoS attacks launched against Romania
Romania has suffered several cyber attacks lately. The Romanian government announced a series of cyber attacks on websites of critical public organizations including the government and the Defense Ministry.
Who Attacked Romania?
Following days of mitigating and remediating key systems, the culprit of the attack was revealed. At a press conference on Friday, a government spokesperson said that the attackers were Russia-backed hackers, Killnet.
Confirming the attack, the group recently released a message to the Romanian government following the attack, which they stated on their telegram channel “Go Fuck the Romanian government.” The group, in its message, warned the country that there will be a surge in its cyber attacks.
The group further stated that the Russian government is only fighting against Nazis and will do no harm to the general public. They also appealed to the citizens to understand their mission and not take offenses.
Go Fuck the Romanian government. Now this is our new favorite slogan, I sing these words when i fuck your servers! Citizens of Romania – Russia is not your enemy! You are being pulled into an endless war, think about why killnet came to your country! Russia is waging war against Nazism! Russia does not kill ordinary people. Please understand this brotherly people before it’s too late!”
The russian hackers group has been exploiting their vulnerabilities due to the lack of cybersecurity measures implemented on these sites. The attack came just days before Romanian politician Marcel Ciolacu said the country was going to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
The russian threat actors seem to be targeting NATO member states providing political, humanitarian or military support to the Ukrainian government. After the attack was launched, sites became unavailable for hours.
The main objective of the attackers was the inactivation of websites and web servers. The Romanian government would be looking to counter these attacks conducted by Killnet as they are likely to face more attacks during this period.
