The new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, wants direct messages to be end-to-end encrypted (E2EE). He on Thursday called for support for this feature to be added as threats increase.

Musk said that Twitter DMs should be end-to-end encrypted like Signal, so no one can spy on or hack them. While the move has been widely applauded, there have been a lot of reactions.

Reactions on Twitter

Bitcoin proponent Michael Saylor complained that in addition to encryption, it would make sense for users to pay a small fee to send messages. He said that a move like this will make DMs more useful and provide another means of revenue for twitter.

One user argued for the need for such action. He claimed that the platform already has policies that allow it to review DMs and act if there are any malicious reports.

Speaking of the importance of encryption, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) said that such policies as the one mentioned above give the company access to personal data. They stated these data could be handed over to law enforcement agencies and leaked by hackers.

Dave lee showed his support for an E2EE by saying the platform could become a full-fledged messaging app if chats were encrypted. Others also called Musk for additions of several features.

The CEO has been looking for ways to improve the social media platform since buying it. In one of his tweets, he preferred that the social media giant should have an edit button that will allow a user to edit an already posted content.

Elon Musk, bought Twitter for $44 billion, or $54.20 per share. However, the deal was not an immediate takeover as it is expected to close within the next six months. The deal was initially denied by the entire board but was later accepted.
