Discord Facing Possible Ban in Russia – Here’s Why

Will Discord be banned in Russia? Recent findings have raised speculations about the messenger's data privacy policy and certain decisions are about to turn tables around.

Russia is considering blocking the popular communication platform, Discord, as tension around online freedom of speech and control continues to rise. According to Kommersant, this move may come as part of broader regulatory efforts to limit the influence of international tech companies that fail to comply with local data regulations.

Why Is Discord Under Threat?

Discord, a platform widely used for gaming, socializing, and professional communication, has grown exponentially in Russia, becoming a hub for various online communities. In early September, its messenger users complained about failures in its operation, but Roskomnador,  the Russian state media regulator, never made any decision to block it.

However, Russian authorities made five recent decisions on violation of the law against it. They contend that it’s data privacy policies is a concern. The country’s existing data law requires companies that handle Russian user data to store it on local servers, which is a regulation that Discord did not fully complied with. As a result, officials may take certain steps to block the platform entirely.

Additionally, the potential ban follows the Russia’s tightening grip on online activities. The government blocked other Western platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (X) have faced similar in recent years. The government aims to secure greater control over the digital space by adding Discord to this list.

Something At Stake

For many Russian users, Discord is a social network and a tool for remote work, learning, and many other online activities like cryptocurrency trading. If blocked, thousands of users could find themselves cut off from international communities and professional networks.  It may push victims to find alternatives, such as Chinese or Russian-developed platforms, which are more strictly regulated by the state.

The Broader Implications

The move by the Russian government could further isolate their online sphere from the global internet. With many international companies already having exited the market or facing restrictions, a Discord ban would deepen the digital divide. However, sources have indicated that the ban is not yet finalized, and discussions are ongoing.

Certainly, the possible Discord ban highlights the current battle between free communication and state oversight in the country of Russia.
