Norway Ministries Cyberattack: Cyber Threat Lasted Four Month Without Detection

Loading

According to a joint advice from Norwegian and US cybersecurity organizations, the recent cyberattack on Norway’s government ministries was due to exploiting a cyber threat pertaining to mobile device management that lasted at least four months.

Since April, the vulnerability affecting Ivanti Endpoint Manager Mobile has allowed proficient resilient threat actors (hackers generally endorsed by a government) to obtain data from various Norwegian enterprises, penetrate, and breach the network of a Norwegian government agency.

Cyber Threat Stayed Unnoticed

The hack on Norway’s government departments set off widespread alarm about the security of sensitive data held by governments worldwide. The fact that hackers are capable to exploit a weakness for at least four months before being detected. This emphasizes the importance of ongoing awareness and proactive cybersecurity measures.

It also emphasizes the significance of frequent software updates and patches to fix known vulnerabilities before criminal actors may exploit them. As technology continues to advance at an unprecedented rate, it is critical that governments and companies alike invest in effective cybersecurity measures to protect against cyber attacks and keep sensitive information out of the hands of the wrong people.

Norway Battles a Covert Attack

Norway, a member of NATO and Europe’s largest gas provider, is now a frequent target for cybercriminals. Recently this month, the Norwegian Refugee Council discovered a cyberattack on a digital database that collects personal data of project participants.

A few hours ago,  the Norwegian recycling and mining business Tomra also warned about an “extensive” intrusion on its networks. Norway became the front-line victim of a denial-of-service (DDoS) assault in June. The most likely criminals were pro-Russian groups.

Later that year, Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre warns that Russia constitute “a real and serious threat” to the country’s oil and gas industry. Norway blames Russia in 2020 for a cyber threat on the Norwegian parliament’s email systems, which Moscow dispute.
