Could it be a Cyberattack? Canada Reports Network Outage

Canada reported network outages in some areas. Citizens started experiencing some abnormalities in the early hours of Friday.

Canada has no Debit or Credit Card Services

Some individuals reported that they are unable to pay for goods and services using their cards. Speaking about the situation, one Twitter user said that if you currently have cash, you are in safe hands as ATMs and POS are down and not available in stores.

Another user said emergency services were not online. He claimed that 911 was not going through in some areas which may lead to a crisis if not quickly resolved. The breakdown also affected key government infrastructure.

One such is the passport offices. Revenue Services, Public Services and procurement were also affected. Another internet provider also reported its inability to offer services to its customers.

What Caused the Outage?

Canada reportedly gifted Ukraine some Armored Personnel Carriers to help in its war against Russia. Some citizens speculated that this may be the reason for a cyberattack as the Russians have been doing lately.

Another Twitter user also went ahead and pointed to Killnet as the likely culprit. However, the Canadian government refuted the claims and offered an explanation.

Roger, the largest network provider in the affected country, reported in the early hours of Friday that major systems were down. As a result, the network outage has spread to areas that depend largely on them.

Emergency services are also working hard to revive communication lines between first aid providers and the general public. The main cause of the breakdown remains to be seen.

Nonetheless, a tech analyst, Ritesh Kotak said an “update gone wrong” could be the reason for the outage. He added that the incident sheds more light on how vulnerable the country’s economy is. In conclusion, he criticized the over reliance on technology.
