China China Retorts, Blames US and Allies Blamed for Spreading False Accusations of Cyberattacks

China alleges that the United States and its supporters made up facts about cyberattacks on key infrastructure in a bid to spread malicious campaigns.

China Claims the Five Eyes Were Involved

According to Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry, this report is highly unprofessional and lacks a chain of facts. She claims the accusations are the result of a coordinated misinformation campaign by the Five Eyes coalition countries.

Microsoft cites Guam, a US island in the Pacific Ocean with a crucial military installation, as one of the targets of the purportedly Chinese state-backed hackers in a report published on Wednesday.

It added that it found activity in other parts of the country. It disclosed that the Chinese-sponsored hackers carried out a hidden operation with other agendas.

The United States and its Five Eyes security alliance allies, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, echoed the allegations, which Beijing refuted on Thursday.

Mao made claims the US “is opening up new channels for circulating misinformation.” However, she added, “No change in strategy can change the fact that the US is a hacker empire.

More on Microsoft’s Report

Microsoft reported on Wednesday that a group of Chinese hackers going by the name of Volt Typhoon is in charge of breaching vital US cyberinfrastructure used by several companies in order to gather intelligence. By targeting the accounts that the firms manage, they got access to these infrastructures.

As a type of investigation, the threat actors engage in this activity to collect the login information for these profiles. Operating since mid-2021, the threat actors are spying on the U.S. in a bid to hinder its responses in the event of a dispute.

Chinese Hackers Keep US Firms at Risk

US firms remain at risk from hackers, who have a record of obtaining crucial and sensitive data. In 2020  the alleged hacking of Covington and Burling, a famous legal firm, took place.

In response to this alarming development, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), in collaboration with international and domestic intelligence services, issued a joint statement that emphasized the ongoing risk that Chinese threats pose to American intellectual property.
