“Canada Will Become the Crypto Capital of the World,” Canadian PM Front Runner Vows
Canada's Opposition Leader, Pierre Poilievre’s Plans to Make Canada a Global Blockchain Leader with Polymarket Giving Him a 89% Victory Probability in Upcoming Elections
The Canadian PM front runner and the leader of Canada’s opposition Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre, remains steadfast in his vision to transform Canada into a global power in the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry. The nation is increasingly garnering attention as the country prepares for federal elections later this year.
In a resurfaced 2022 campaign video, Poilievre was seen purchasing a chicken shawarma using Bitcoin. At the event, he announced his plans on making Canada the “blockchain and crypto capital of the world,” promising regulatory reforms to enable innovation especially in the decentralized financial sector.
An Advocate for Crypto Freedom
Since assuming leadership of the Conservative Party in 2022, Poilievre has consistently advocated for cryptocurrency adoption and blockchain innovation.
He has been an open critic of Canada’s central banking policies, arguing that the policies contribute to inflation and stifles financial freedom. He has pushed Bitcoin as a solution for Canadians seeking to “opt-out” of traditional monetary systems.
“Government is ruining the Canadian dollar, so Canadians should have the freedom to use other money, such as Bitcoin.” Poilievre declared in 2022.
Additionally, he has also called for treating crypto assets like commodities for tax purposes, creating favorable regulations for blockchain startups, and opposing the implementation of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
In April 2024, Poilievre supported a bill to ban CBDCs in Canada, calling them a threat to personal freedom and privacy.
The Canadian PM Front Runner Personal Interest in Crypto
Poilievre’s interest in cryptocurrency extends beyond policymaking. He revealed that he and his wife often watch Bitcoin advocate Robert Breedlove’s YouTube channel for insights into monetary policy and digital assets.
In May 2022, reports showed that his financial disclosures included investments in the Purpose Bitcoin ETF. Although his current holdings remain undisclosed, Poilievre still remains very much committed to the crypto market.
Trudeau’s Resignation Shifts Political Landscape
Justin Trudeau’s recent announcement of his resignation as Liberal Party leader has paved the way for a possible shift in Canadian politics. Trudeau chose to step down amid mounting criticism of his handling of economic issues and US trade relations.
Poilievre’s Conservative Party is now well-positioned to form a majority government, with Polymarket predicting an 89% probability of victory. If elected, Poilievre plans to introduce changes to Canada’s financial policies, with cryptocurrency and blockchain innovation at the very center of his policies.
