British Army YouTube and Twitter Accounts Compromised

Loading

Some hackers hacked the British Army’s Youtube and Twitter accounts yesterday. Although they have recovered the account and taken the necessary security measures, they said that investigations are still ongoing.

The hackers seemed to be crypto and NFT enthusiasts. They posted videos of cryptocurrencies and also used images of Tesla founder Elon Musk on their YouTube channel. On Twitter, the hackers used the account to retweet several posts related NFTs. They retweeted NFT artwork from other accounts.

Both British Accounts Were Used for Adverts

As the threat actors gained access to both accounts, they made a few changes. They changed the twitter profile name to “Bapesclan” and used an NFT of an ape cartoon figure wearing facepaint.

The hackers were using both accounts to promote a non-fungible token project collection named ‘Bapesclan’. It all came to an end before midnight and everything returned back to normal.

The Army confirmed the breach, saying it took information security “extremely seriously” and was resolving the issue. They added that IT personnel got to work immediately to confirm the attack and have recovered them.

A spokesperson for the affected entity said that although they have resolved the issue, an investigation is ongoing to prevent such attempts and apprehend the culprit.

He apologized to the public that a military account was the subject of a cyberattack. He added they will conduct a full investigation and learn from the incident and thanked everyone who followed their respective social media accounts.

They currently boast of 362,000 followers on Twitter and 177,000 subscribers on YouTube. A conservative member of the parliament of the United Kingdom, Tobias Ellwood, said the incident that occurred looks very serious.

He said in a tweet that he hopes the results of the investigation and actions taken will be shared appropriately. As at the time of writing, no threat actors have claimed responsibility for the attack
