Actor and comedian Bill Murray has become the victim of a cyberattack. The report says that hackers looted over $185,000 from his blockchain wallet during an NFT auction.

Recently, Murray hosted an NFT auction for charity and raised about 119.2 ETH (around 185,000). On Thursday, some hours after the auction had ended, the hackers stole the funds.

According to CoinDesk, the hacker started draining Murray’s wallet at 7 pm on Thursday. Details from Murray’s team also revealed that the hackers tried to steal non-fungible tokens from Murray’s personal collection.

However, the hackers were unable to cause more damage as the actor had the backing of a wallet security team. His security team from NFT consultancy Project Venkman stepped in to stop the threat actors from stealing the NFTs.

The team said they moved his high-priced JPEGs such as a Damien Hirst NFT, two CryptoPunks, a Pudgy Penguin, a Cool Cat, and Flowers Girls NFTs into a pair of safehouse wallets.

Furthermore, Project Venkman said it thwarted the hackers’ attempt to steal said assets from the comedian’s collection that were sitting in his wallet. They added that they ran a script to automatically move the NFTs to safety.

A representative for Project Veltman confirmed that they were unable to recover the 119.2 ETH the hackers made off with. They also revealed that the cybercriminals sent the stolen funds to addresses tied to Unionchain.ai and Binance. Unfortunately, they are yet to identify the culprit.

In addition, a runner-up in the auction, Coinbase user Mishap72, transferred 120 ETH (around $187,500) to Chive Charities to replace the stolen funds. A representative of the non-profit charity organization revealed this to CoinDesk.

This particular cyberattack showcases how even celebrities can easily fall victim to crypto hackers. Murray’s team said it has filed a police report and is working with the crypto analytics firm Chainalysis to bring the hackers to justice.
