The Japanese Government Counters

According to a Tokyo-based cybersecurity firm, S&J Corp, the e-gov website went down at around 16:30 on Tuesday. The report also states that authorities moved quickly to restore the website.

Nobuo Miwa, the President of S&J Corp, said his company is investigating the cause of the outage.

Meanwhile, Killnet, the devastating Russian hackers, has continued to target countries. The group uses distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks to bombard website servers with unwanted traffic to paralyze them.

According to Japan News, the Russian hackers named a Japanese consumer credit company and a social media service as their targets. A security expert, Yoshikawa Takashi, said concerning the attack, “DDoS attacks do not involve information theft. However, there is a possibility the attacks will continue in the days ahead. A level-headed response is required.”

More Attacks From Killnet

In July, Killnet launched a similar attack on the US congress’ website. The hackers used their common tactic, distributed denial of service (DDoS) to temporarily shut down the website. They claimed responsibility for the attack on congress.gov. Furthermore, the hackers posted on their channel a picture of President Joe Biden having a puzzled look on his face. However, the website was restored to normal the next day.

Recently, Killnet threatened to launch a cyberattack on a Turkish company, Baykar. The threatening message came in after, the founder of the company, Haluk Bayraktar, refused to sell the company to Russia. He said to BBC in an interview, “The basis of our business has never been money and material things. No matter how much money Moscow offers us, we will not sell to them.”

Killnet has also threatened to launch an attack on ten countries and the Italian police. The hackers revealed on its telegram channel replying to the Italian Police’s claims of thwarting one of its attacks. The Russian hackers called a cyber war on ten countries including the US, the UK, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Romania, and Latvia.
